New Year Intentions: How to Use Candles to Set Goals for the Year Ahead
The turn of a new year is one of the most natural moments for reflection and intention-setting in the human calendar. Something about the threshold — the ending of one cycle and the beginning of another — invites us to pause, take stock, and choose, with some deliberateness, how we want to move forward.
But resolutions, as most of us know, rarely stick. The reason is usually that they’re set from the head rather than the heart — lists of things we think we should do, rather than intentions rooted in what we genuinely want and why. A candle ritual for the new year is a different kind of practice. It’s slower, more embodied, and more honest. Here’s how to do it.
The Difference Between a Resolution and an Intention
A resolution is a commitment to a specific behaviour: I will go to the gym three times a week. I will stop eating sugar. I will read more. These aren’t bad — but they tend to be brittle. When life intervenes (and it always does), the resolution breaks, and with it often comes a sense of failure that makes it harder to try again.
An intention is different. It’s a direction rather than a destination — a quality of being you want to cultivate, rather than a behaviour you want to enforce. I intend to move through this year with more courage. I intend to prioritise my healing. I intend to create more freely and judge myself less. Intentions are flexible. They can be returned to after a stumble without the weight of failure.
A candle ritual is particularly well-suited to setting intentions, because it engages the whole person — not just the analytical mind, but the senses, the emotions, and the deeper knowing that lives beneath conscious thought.
Preparing for Your New Year Candle Ritual
Before you begin, give yourself some time — ideally an hour, though even thirty minutes will do. Find a quiet space, clear the surface around your candle, and have a journal or notebook nearby.
Spend a few minutes in reflection before you light anything. Ask yourself:
- What am I leaving behind from this past year? What no longer serves me?
- What do I want to call in? What quality of life, of being, of experience?
- What does my soul most need in the year ahead?
Write your answers down. Don’t edit or judge — just let what’s true come through.
Choosing Your Candle
Choose the candle that best reflects the energy you most want to cultivate in the year ahead. You might use one, or you might use all four at different points in the ritual — one for what you’re releasing, one for what you’re calling in.
- Michael Candle — for a year of courage, protection, and stepping fully into your power. Choose Michael if you’ve been playing small and you’re ready to change that.
- Raphael Candle — for a year of healing, restoration, and genuine self-care. Choose Raphael if the past year has been hard and you need to rebuild from a place of gentleness.
- Gabriel Candle — for a year of clarity, creative expression, and finding your voice. Choose Gabriel if you have something to say, something to create, or something to begin.
- Uriel Candle — for a year of wisdom, deep knowing, and making decisions from a place of genuine insight. Choose Uriel if you’re at a crossroads and need to trust yourself more fully.
The Ritual
1. Ground yourself. Take three slow, deep breaths. Feel your feet on the floor. Let the noise of the day settle.
2. State what you’re releasing. Before you light the candle, speak aloud (or write) what you’re consciously leaving behind from the past year. Be specific. Name it, acknowledge it, and let it go with gratitude for what it taught you.
3. Light the candle with your intention. As you strike the match, hold your intention for the year clearly in mind. Speak it aloud: “Archangel [name], I invite your energy into this new year. I set my intention to [your intention]. Please support me in living this fully.”
4. Sit and write. With the candle burning, spend time journalling your intentions in detail. What does this year look like if you live your intention fully? How do you feel? What has changed? Write it in the present tense, as if it’s already true.
5. Close with gratitude. When you’re ready, take a moment to express gratitude — for the year that has passed, for the year ahead, and for the support of the archangel you’ve called on. Extinguish the candle gently.
Returning to Your Intention Throughout the Year
The ritual doesn’t end when the candle goes out. Keep your written intentions somewhere you’ll see them — in your journal, on your desk, or beside your candle. Return to them at each new month, each season, each moment when you feel you’ve drifted. The candle can be relit as a way of renewing your commitment — a small, consistent act of remembering who you’re choosing to be.
