How to Use Candles for Confidence and Self-Belief

Confidence is not a fixed trait that some people have and others don’t. It is a state — one that can be cultivated, supported, and called upon deliberately. And like all states, it is influenced by the environment we create around ourselves, the rituals we use to prepare, and the energies we consciously invite into our lives.

A candle ritual for confidence is not about pretending to feel something you don’t. It is about creating the internal and external conditions in which your genuine strength — which is always there, even when it is not accessible — can come forward. Here is how.

Why Confidence Falters

Confidence falters for many reasons: past experiences of failure or rejection that have lodged themselves as beliefs about what we are capable of; the voices of others — parents, teachers, critics — that we have internalised as our own; the natural anxiety that accompanies anything genuinely important to us; the gap between where we are and where we want to be.

What all of these have in common is that they are stories — narratives about who we are and what we can do that feel like facts but are actually interpretations. A candle ritual for confidence is, in part, a practice of interrupting those stories and replacing them, deliberately and repeatedly, with truer ones.

Choosing Your Candle for Confidence

  • Michael Candle — the primary choice for confidence work. Michael is the archangel of courage — the one who walks beside you into the difficult places and ensures you do not face them alone. His energy is strong, clear, and protective — the energy of someone who knows their worth and acts from that knowing. When you need to step up, speak out, or show up fully, Michael is the archangel to call on.
  • Gabriel Candle — for confidence specifically around communication, creative expression, or being seen. Gabriel is the archangel of the clear channel — the one who opens the connection between what you feel and what you can express. If your confidence falters around speaking, writing, performing, or sharing your work, Gabriel is your ally.
  • Raphael Candle — for confidence that has been eroded by past hurt, criticism, or failure. Raphael’s healing energy works on the wounds that underlie the lack of confidence — the old rejections, the internalised criticisms, the places where you stopped believing in yourself because someone else stopped believing in you first.

A Candle Ritual for Confidence

Use this ritual before any situation that requires you to show up fully — a presentation, a difficult conversation, a creative performance, a job interview, a first date, or simply a day when you need to remember who you are.

Step 1: Create stillness. Sit quietly and light your candle. Take five slow breaths. Let the noise of the day settle. You are moving from the surface of life into its depths.

Step 2: Name what you are facing. In your journal or simply in your mind, name the situation that requires confidence. Be specific: I am presenting to a room of fifty people. I am having a conversation I have been avoiding. I am sharing my work publicly for the first time.

Step 3: Name the fear beneath the lack of confidence. Confidence rarely falters without a reason. What is the fear? I am afraid of being judged. I am afraid of failing. I am afraid of being seen and found wanting. Name it honestly. The fear loses some of its power when it is named.

Step 4: Call on archangel support. Speak aloud to the archangel whose candle you have lit:

Archangel Michael, I am stepping into something that requires more courage than I feel right now.
Please stand beside me. Lend me your strength. Help me remember who I am.
I am capable. I am enough. I am ready.
Thank you.

Step 5: Speak your truth statements. Write or speak three statements about yourself that are genuinely true — not aspirational affirmations, but real things you know about yourself: I have prepared for this. I have done hard things before. I care deeply about this, and that caring is a strength, not a weakness.

Step 6: Carry the flame with you. Before you extinguish the candle, take a moment to visualise the archangel’s light surrounding you — Michael’s deep blue, Gabriel’s clear white, Raphael’s emerald green. Imagine carrying that light with you into the situation ahead. It goes where you go.

Building Confidence Over Time

A single ritual can shift your state in the moment. But confidence built over time — through consistent practice, through the accumulation of evidence that you can do hard things, through the gradual replacement of old stories with truer ones — is deeper and more durable.

Consider making a brief candle practice part of your morning routine — a few minutes each day of sitting with your candle, naming what you are stepping into, and calling on archangel support. Over weeks and months, this practice builds something real.
