How to Choose a Candle Based on Your Intention

Walking into a candle shop — or browsing one online — can feel overwhelming. There are so many options: different scents, colours, sizes, wax types, and brands. But if you approach the choice from the inside out — starting with your intention rather than the candle itself — the decision becomes much simpler.

Here’s a practical guide to choosing a candle based on what you actually need.

Start with the Question: What Do I Need Right Now?

Before you look at any candle, sit with this question for a moment. Not what you think you should need, or what sounds appealing — but what you genuinely need right now, in this season of your life.

Common answers include:

  • I need to feel safe and protected
  • I need to heal — physically, emotionally, or both
  • I need clarity — I can’t think straight
  • I need wisdom — I’m facing a decision I don’t know how to make
  • I need calm — everything feels too loud
  • I need courage — I’m avoiding something I know I need to do
  • I need inspiration — I’m creatively blocked

Your answer to this question is your intention. And your intention is the most important factor in choosing a candle.

Match Your Intention to an Energy

Once you know what you need, you can match it to the energy that best supports it. In the Archangel Ireland collection, each candle is aligned with a specific archangel and the domain they govern:

For Protection, Courage, or Strength → Michael Candle

If you need to feel safe, to face something you’ve been avoiding, to set a firm boundary, or to step into your power — Michael’s energy is what you’re looking for. His candle is grounding, strong, and quietly reassuring.

Light it when: you feel anxious or unsafe, you’re starting something new, you need to have a difficult conversation, or you want to clear negative energy from your space.

For Healing, Calm, or Restoration → Raphael Candle

If you’re recovering — from illness, grief, burnout, or heartbreak — or if you simply need to slow down and restore, Raphael’s energy is what you need. His candle is gentle, warm, and deeply nurturing.

Light it when: you’re unwell, emotionally exhausted, processing loss, or in need of a long, quiet exhale.

For Clarity, Creativity, or Communication → Gabriel Candle

If you’re struggling to find the right words, feeling creatively blocked, or needing to think clearly — Gabriel’s energy cuts through the noise. His candle is bright, clarifying, and gently energising.

Light it when: you’re writing, creating, journalling, preparing for an important conversation, or setting intentions for a new chapter.

For Wisdom, Insight, or Reflection → Uriel Candle

If you’re facing a decision that logic alone can’t resolve, or if you need to go deeper — into yourself, into a situation, into a question — Uriel’s energy is what you’re seeking. His candle is still, deep, and contemplative.

Light it when: you’re meditating, studying, seeking answers, or navigating a crossroads.

Consider the Wax

Beyond intention, the quality of the candle matters — especially if you’re using it as part of a regular practice. Natural soy wax burns cleaner and longer than paraffin, releases fragrance more consistently, and is a more sustainable choice. If you’re lighting a candle with intention, it’s worth choosing one that honours that intention in its materials too.

All Archangel Ireland candles are hand-poured in 100% natural soy wax. You can read more about why we chose it in our guide to why we use natural soy wax.

Trust Your Response

Finally — trust yourself. If you’re drawn to a particular candle without being able to fully explain why, that instinct is worth following. Intention-based choosing is partly rational and partly intuitive. Both matter.
